About Youth Sailing
more than just a sport
Youth sailing programs serve as a gateway for children to develop essential life skills, confidence, and a love for the water. These programs introduce young sailors to the fundamentals of sailing and encourage problem-solving, teamwork, patience, and adaptability that benefits youth on and off the water. Sailing also provides a hands-on way to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) concepts and promotes environmental awareness and responsibility. Additionally, youth sailing programs create an inclusive space where kids of all backgrounds thrive, as success in the sport is based on strategy and skill rather than physical strength alone. Like all sports, sailing provides structure, discipline, and a positive outlet, and keeps youth engaged in a healthy hobby that fosters responsibility and personal growth.
At The Foundry, our sailing pipeline guides students from Discover Sailing Experiences, where they are first introduced to the sport, to Explore Sailing Programs, which build foundational knowledge and confidence that leads to independence on the water. From there, students can join Interscholastic Racing Programs and participate in Community Racing. All Foundry sailing programs build sailors who will become active members of Cleveland’s sailing community, whether they continue sailing for recreation or competition. Learning and enjoying the sport doesn’t stop at childhood or a single program, but becomes a lifelong hobby, career, or passion that grows with the individual.
