Sailing Academy

The Foundry's Sailing Academy is an engaging, onshore after-school program designed for 3rd-5th graders eager to learn about sailing!

STEM Club
5th - 8th grade
The Foundry's STEM Club program is a program designed for 6th-8th graders, and engages students in real-world applications of STEM concepts.

Interscholastic Sailing
9th - 12th Grade
The Cleveland Foundry’s Interscholastic Sailing Program is open to student athletes in the 6th through 12th grades.

Middle School Sailing
5th - 8th Grade
The Cleveland Foundry’s Interscholastic Sailing Program is open to student athletes in 6th and 7th grades.

Keelboats After School
3rd - 5th Grade
The Explore Keelboats offers high schoolers who may not know how to swim or unsure about racing the chance to sail.
Explore sailing academy
An after School Program for 3rd - 5th graders!
The Explore Sailing Academy is an engaging, onshore after-school program designed for 3rd-5th graders eager to learn about sailing! Through hands-on activities and interactive lessons, students will gain foundational knowledge and life skills that prepare them to sail on Lake Erie as early as the following spring or summer.
Students will also meet The Foundry’s sailing coaches, who will guide them in future programs. This program fosters curiosity and confidence, helping students understand the mechanics and thrill of sailing before they even step into a boat!
Weather Policy:
The program follows the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s (CMSD) closure schedule. If CMSD closes due to weather, The Foundry will also cancel programming. Parents will be notified via email of any schedule changes.
Transportation:
If The Foundry is providing transportation from your child’s school, students will be picked up at dismissal and arrive at The Foundry between 3:00 - 3:30 PM. Parents should pick up their children from The Foundry between 5:00 - 5:30 PM.
*The Foundry prioritizes safety and fun. All staff members are certified in SafeSport, VIRTUS, CPR/AED, and First Aid. On-the-water instructors hold additional U.S. Sailing Small Boat Instructor Level One certifications or higher.

explore STEM Club
Program for 6th - 8th Grade Students!
The Explore Sailing STEM Club is an onshore after school program for 6th-8th graders interested in learning about the science, technology, engineering and math involved in sailing! Students will develop background knowledge and transferable life skills to enjoy sailing on Lake Erie as early as this summer. With the help of US Sailing REACH certified STEM instructors, 6-8th graders measure sails, learn about local waterways, investigate buoyancy, race on sailing simulators, build wind anemometers, design boats, and more.
This program is perfect for sailors looking to supplement their on-the-water training, and great for middle schoolers interested in learning to sail! Students will work closely with the Foundry sailing coaches that will deliver instruction on the water in future programs. This program offers introductory activities that deepen students’ understanding of the how and why behind sailing, so they are eager to get into a boat and learn more! Students that enjoy the Explore Sailing STEM Club can register for Explore Sailing Camps and then The Foundry’s Middle School Developmental racing program to continue developing their sailing skills.

MIDDLE SCHOOL sailing
Program for 5th - 8th graders!
The Middle School Sailing program is for 5th-8th graders interested in racing E420's in high school. This program is designed for newer sailors learning to race or those transitioning from optis, prams, lasers, and other boats to double-handed, E420 racing boats. Prior experience learn to sail programs is recommended but not required.

ADULT EXPLORE SAILING
Beginner One
Step aboard one of The Foundry’s 33-foot sailboats for our Adult Explore Sailing Beginner One course! This course is an introduction to the basic knowledge and skills of sailing. No prior experience is needed. This is a "hands on" series of classes with instruction on land and on water by US Sailing certified coaches. Participants will learn the parts of the boat, points of sail, knot tying, identifying wind direction, and more with the Cleveland skyline as the backdrop! Our experienced instructors focus on safety and fun, so that you leave the course confident on the water and eager to learn more.
3 sessions offered for three consecutive weeks on Mondays or Thursdays from 5:30 PM- 7:30 PM
The Foundry’s Adult Explore Sailing Intermediate course is for adults interested in refining their fundamental skills and adding to the knowledge gained in The Foundry’s Adult Explore Sailing Beginner One and Two courses. This small group course provides additional "hands on" instruction on our 22-foot sailboat. Taught by US Sailing certified coaches. Participants will continue to work on tiller steering, sail trim, and begin learning the sailboat racing rules of the road. This course will introduce a third sail, called the Spinnaker, which is used during downwind sailing.

The Foundry’s Adult Explore Sailing Beginner Two course is for adults interested in improving their fundamental skills and adding to the knowledge gained in the Adult Explore Sailing Beginner One course. This is a "hands on" series of classes with instruction on land and on water by US Sailing certified coaches. Participants will gain additional experience with tiller steering, sail trim, beating, and more. Instruction will dive deeper into the points of sail and how the headsail and mainsail work in tandem to improve boat speed of one of our 33-foot sailboats

ADULT EXPLORE SAILING
DINGHY SAILING
The Foundry’s Adult Explore Dinghy Sailing course is an introduction to the basic knowledge and skills of sailing dinghy sailboats. Hop into one of The Foundry’s 13-foot, two person racing boats to learn how to steer the boat, trim the sails, and use your body weight to keep the boat fast! Some prior experience is recommended. This is a physical and "hands on" series of classes with instruction on land and on water, by US Sailing certified small boat instructors. Participants will learn the parts of the boat, points of sail, knot tying, identifying wind direction, and more with the Cleveland skyline as the backdrop! Our experienced instructors focus on safety and fun, so that you leave the course confident on the water and eager to learn more.
*No experience required

Interscholastic sailing
Program for 6th - 12th graders!
The Cleveland Foundry’s Interscholastic Sailing Program is open to student athletes in the 6th through 12th grades. It includes ten weeks of on-the-water practice and coaching at sailing competitions. (Please note that 6th and 7th graders are not able participate in Fall regattas.) The student athletes have access to a fleet of professionally maintained dinghies, certified coaches and more.
Jv - For sailors who wish to participate in Tier 3 regattas only; All 8th graders + Any high schoolers with 3 or less students from the same high school
Varsity - For sailors who wish to participate in all tiers of regattas; High schoolers with 4 or more students from the same school
Please note that prior sailing experience is recommended.​​​
Register by August 1st and Lock in Pricing from Spring 2025
Team Composition:
To participate in Tier 1 and 2 regattas, sailors must belong to a team of both an A and B boat from the same school (a full team is comprised of four sailors from the same school).
Tier 3 regattas allow a mix of sailors from different schools. Team composition is at the discretion of The Foundry coaching staff.

An after school program for 9th - 12th graders!
The Explore Keelboats After-School Program provides high schoolers with the opportunity to experience the thrill of sailing in a casual, team-oriented environment. Keelboats offer a stable and engaging platform, making
them an ideal entry point for those who may not know how to swim or are unsure whether they are interested in competitive racing. This after school program is designed to inspire and prepare participants to join Cleveland’s sailing community through a mix of land based and on the water instruction.
This program equips students with confidence, transferable life skills, and connections to enjoy the camaraderie of local club races and community sailing events. The Explore Keelboats After-School Program provides Cleveland area high schoolers with a connection to the water, beyond high school racing.

Program for sailors ages 5 - 7!
Explore Pram Sailing offers a broad introduction to sailing designed specifically for children ages 5–7. This program gently guides young sailors from land-based instruction to hands-on experience on the water, using eight-foot, single-person sailboats called prams. Participants, referred to as “first mates”, will learn to steer and harness the wind. Instruction takes place in a safe, controlled environment; either in a pool or a protected basin on Lake Erie. Parents and guardians should plan to stay on-site and participate alongside their young sailors, making it a shared adventure. Explore Pram Sailing provides the foundation for future skill advancement in Explore Sailing Camps as early as the following summer, depending on the sailor’s age.

Program for _____ Students!
The Foundry’s Explore Sailing Camps provide youth with the background knowledge and skills to sail one or two person boats on Lake Erie at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Explore sailing camp instruction
is delivered by experienced, certified US Sailing small boat instructors that focus on safety and fun. Sailors will spend time on shore learning the points of sail, parts of the boat, knot tying, rules of the road, and more, before taking to the water to practice sail trim and tiller steering. The Foundry recommends two or three weeks of beginner camps before intermediate. Sailors will complete a skills check at the beginning and end of every camp, to determine their readiness to move on to the next level.
