Director of Rowing
Steve McCarthy joins the Foundry as Director of Rowing after spending the previous two years at the George Washington University. He works with all rowing programming here at the Foundry – whether it’s our summer small boat program, learn-to-row, Cleveland Foundry Juniors, St. Ed’s, SUP sculling – you name it! You are more likely to find him in a launch than in his office.
During his time at GW the team achieved historically high program-wide finishes at the IRA National Championship. Steve has spent his last 10 summers coaching with the USRowing U19 National Team at all levels, including the 2018 World Championships, 5 CanAmMex regattas, and numerous USRowing High Performance Teams. With the USRowing National Team, Steve has worked with both sweepers and scullers – the CanAmMex 4x from 2019 also went on to represent the United States at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Prior to GW, he spent the greater part of 2017 working with the Dartmouth Lightweights. At Dartmouth, McCarthy coached the 2v, 3v, and 4v eights to outplace their seeding at Eastern Sprints. In 2016, while leading Three Rivers Junior Rowing, the Women’s Youth 4+ were Head of the Charles Regatta Champions.
Steve brings a wealth of experience at the collegiate, junior, and national team level. He has coached youth athletes through all levels of engagement – learn-to-row, novices, recreational, performance, and national team competition. Steve is an expert at guiding young athletes through the college recruiting process.
Before he began coaching Steve rowed for Northeastern University – earning a seat in the Varsity 8+ for three years straight and the 1st Freshman 8+. He began his rowing career at Fox Chapel Area High School in Pittsburgh, PA.
